What is Portable Appliance Testing?

Portable appliance testing refers to the testing of hand-held, portable and plug-in electrical equipment. It is a required part of the health & safety routine for all portable electrical equipment used in a work environment.

During PAT testing, sequences of tests are performed on all portable appliances, to ensure they still meet the specified electrical standards that they achieved when they were manufactured.

Each item is tested and a label applied confirming it is safe to use. These results are recorded and logged.

Why is Portable Appliance Testing Required?

There is a legal responsibility and obligation on all employers and employees to take practicable steps to ensure that no dangers occur from portable electrical equipment. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2007 obliges owners, directors, managers and safety officers in Ireland to ensure the safety of all employees and section SI 732 requires all appliances to be tested regularly and records maintained for five years.
